Welcome to Ancient Places. This website has been a bit of a chameleon. It has now changed from a set of personal impressions of places in Dorset, such as Hengistbury Head and Christchurch Castle to a customised search engine based on Google technology. It is now targeted at indexing websites that have a particular relevence to places of historical, ecological or religious significance in the the three counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. When I started out with my personal impressions I soon realised that I could not hope to provide a single website that encompassed even a smattering of these special sites in one county, let alone in the whole of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. I also know that there is a lot of really good information out there but, with a standard search engine, a great deal of it gets buried under a mountain of irrelevent clutter. The purpose of this site is now to remove the clutter and allow the user to focus in on the information related to these special places. I hope it works for you. Just to keep the original ethos of this site alive, it also hosts a number of pages on places I find particularly worthwhile and hopefully, as I get time, this list will grow. Currently there are pages on: I will also be adding to the selected sites indexed here as well as I come across good sites. The "buzz cloud" of search terms above the search box will perform a search with the minimum of fuss, while using the search box operates in exactly the same way as a
standard Google search. Of course, if you try an off-topic search, you will not get much!
